Most hiking packs are water-resistant, not waterproof. To keep gear dry on a rainy trek you have two options: a roll-top dry pack, or a normal hiking pack with a waterproof liner and dry bags inside. The six picks below cost $11.99 to $139.95 on Amazon (price on November 1, 2026).
Prices are from Amazon.com on November 1, 2026 and change often. Specs are from each manufacturer unless noted.

1. Sea to Summit Big River Dry Backpack 30L: a real waterproof pack
The Big River is a roll-top dry bag with proper adjustable shoulder straps and a sternum strap. Fabric and seams are waterproof, so it’s built for days when gear will get soaked from outside.

- Size: 22 x 29 x 55 cm (9 x 11 x 22 in)
- 420D ripstop nylon bonded to TPU; 10,000 mm hydrostatic head

3. Osprey Ultralight Pack Liner (Medium): waterproof any pack
A liner is the lightest way to keep a pack’s contents dry. Unlike a rain cover, it can’t blow off and it protects against water soaking through the back panel.
Key specs (manufacturer):
- Weight: 116 g (0.26 lb)
- 58 L volume; fits 50 to 70 L packs (Small fits 30 to 50 L, Large 70 to 100 L)
- Recycled 40D high-tenacity nylon, waterproof coating and seams
- Roll-top closure
Pros
- Weighs almost nothing
- Works with the pack you already own
- Keeps the inside dry even when the pack fabric is soaked
Downsides
- $47.48 is steep compared with a heavy-duty trash bag
- Thin fabric can puncture on sharp gear
- The pack itself still gets wet and heavy

Pros
- Large waterproof volume for the price
- Floats if dropped in water
- Sold by Earth Pak on Amazon when checked
Downsides
- No frame: uncomfortable for long hikes with heavy loads
- PVC doesn’t breathe, so your back gets sweaty
- Not fully submersible despite the waterproof label

Waterproof, water-resistant or rain cover?
- Waterproof pack: waterproof fabric, taped seams and a roll-top. Best for river crossings and constant spray.
- Water-resistant pack: coated fabric that sheds light rain. Water gets in through zips and seams in heavy rain.
- Rain cover: helps, but wind can lift it and the back panel still soaks through.
- Liner plus dry bags: the most reliable setup for multi-day treks. The liner keeps the main load dry, and small dry bags protect electronics and documents.
Wet-weather packing checklist
- Pack liner inside the main compartment
- Sleeping bag in its own dry bag
- Phone, passport and cash in a small dry bag
- Rain cover for the outside of the pack
- Spare dry socks sealed away from wet gear
