1. Sea to Summit Big River Dry Backpack 30L: a real waterproof pack

The Big River is a roll-top dry bag with proper adjustable shoulder straps and a sternum strap. Fabric and seams are waterproof, so it’s built for days when gear will get soaked from outside.

Key specs (manufacturer):

  • Weight: 670 g (23.6 oz), 30 L
  • Size: 22 x 29 x 55 cm (9 x 11 x 22 in)
  • 420D ripstop nylon bonded to TPU; 10,000 mm hydrostatic head
  • Taped seams; Hypalon roll-top closure
  • Also sold in 50 L ($169.95 on Amazon, November 1, 2026)

Pros

  • Fully waterproof body and seams
  • Adjustable straps carry better than a basic dry bag
  • Sold by Sea to Summit on Amazon when checked

Downsides

  • Single-tube design: no pockets, so you dig to the bottom for gear
  • 30 L is too small for multi-day camping
  • Most expensive item in this list

2. TETON Sports Scout 55L: budget hiking pack with rain cover

The Scout is a framed hiking pack, not a waterproof pack. Its exterior is water-repellent and it comes with a rain cover. Pair it with the Osprey liner below for proper wet-weather protection.

  • 55 L, internal frame
  • Fits torsos 15 to 19.5 in; hip belt 26 to 60 in
  • Integrated rain cover, hydration sleeve, sleeping bag compartment

Pros

  • Heavy for 55 L
  • Only 15 left on Amazon when checked

3. Osprey Ultralight Pack Liner (Medium): waterproof any pack

A liner is the lightest way to keep a pack’s contents dry. Unlike a rain cover, it can’t blow off and it protects against water soaking through the back panel.

Key specs (manufacturer):

  • Weight: 116 g (0.26 lb)
  • 58 L volume; fits 50 to 70 L packs (Small fits 30 to 50 L, Large 70 to 100 L)
  • Recycled 40D high-tenacity nylon, waterproof coating and seams
  • Roll-top closure

Pros

  • Weighs almost nothing
  • Works with the pack you already own
  • Keeps the inside dry even when the pack fabric is soaked

Downsides

  • $47.48 is steep compared with a heavy-duty trash bag
  • Thin fabric can puncture on sharp gear
  • The pack itself still gets wet and heavy

4. Earth Pak 55L Dry Bag Backpack: for boats, not long hikes

Earth Pak 55 liter roll-top waterproof dry bag backpack

  • Earth Pak rates the bag IPX5 and says not to submerge it for more than 5 to 10 seconds
  • Padded shoulder straps, sternum strap and waist belt
  • 55 L; listed at about 0.82 kg (1.81 lb) and 24 x 12 x 24 in by a retailer

Pros

  • Large waterproof volume for the price
  • Floats if dropped in water
  • Sold by Earth Pak on Amazon when checked

Downsides

  • No frame: uncomfortable for long hikes with heavy loads
  • PVC doesn’t breathe, so your back gets sweaty
  • Not fully submersible despite the waterproof label

  • Recycled 70D nylon; 10,000 mm hydrostatic head
  • Taped seams, Hypalon roll-top closure
  • Not designed for submersion

Pros

  • Very light
  • Durable for a thin bag

  • Only 19 left from the seller on Amazon when checked

  • Includes waterproof touchscreen phone case
  • Rated for accidental submersion, not use underwater

Pros

  • Lowest price here at $11.99
  • Phone case included
  • See-through, so you can find things fast

Downsides

  • PVC is heavy for its size compared with nylon dry bags
  • Single strap isn’t comfortable for long hikes
  • Specs come from the seller and resellers; HEETA’s own spec details are limited

Waterproof, water-resistant or rain cover?

  • Waterproof pack: waterproof fabric, taped seams and a roll-top. Best for river crossings and constant spray.
  • Water-resistant pack: coated fabric that sheds light rain. Water gets in through zips and seams in heavy rain.
  • Rain cover: helps, but wind can lift it and the back panel still soaks through.
  • Liner plus dry bags: the most reliable setup for multi-day treks. The liner keeps the main load dry, and small dry bags protect electronics and documents.

Wet-weather packing checklist

  • Pack liner inside the main compartment
  • Sleeping bag in its own dry bag
  • Phone, passport and cash in a small dry bag
  • Rain cover for the outside of the pack
  • Spare dry socks sealed away from wet gear
